I can recommend Toshiba as solid and reliable laptops, in my experience solid build quality and decent performance. The Satellite Pro range seems to have the best balance of price / performance.

I had been using asus and acer and despite some negative comments i've read/heard i've not had a problem over the many years i've been using one or the other except for a bad hard drive a few years back - i usually turn around a computer after 3 yrs or so.

However, i did have to supplement my setup with a mac early this year for some work - just a lil imac. And although you requested something 'outside Apple', i have to say i've not been back on my win box all year. Was annoyingly different the first few weeks, then a brilliantly productive setup since.

Energy independence is possible. The USA does have the resources and technology, but the politics of energy stand in the way.

Energy Independence is within our reach. let's not forget why we are reaching for it.

There are tax credits for commercial solar panels for 5 year depreciation but I could not find anything similar for home owners:

http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:FHADUM-deFwJ:www.phillysolar.org/tax_form.htm+depreciation+of+solar+panels&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us

I kinda doubt that most home owners factor the depreciation costs into their energy budget each year, but it would have a similar schedule to commercial ones.

I am just hesitant at the moment due to the advances and the price tag. For me, its like buying a big screen TV before the costs started to lower due to technological advances;)

I think solar panels will not be depreciated that fast, It is still worth to invest.
